Chris German MBE

Chris German MBE

Senior Scientist, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Explorers Club Fellow

Since graduating from Cambridge with a BA (Natural Sciences) and a PhD (Marine Geochemistry), Chris has split his 30 year career to-date between the UK (IOSDL, SOC) and the US (MIT, WHOI).  His specialty is deep sea vent exploration: What controls it, geologically? What impact does it have on ocean biogeochemistry and biogeography?

Having discovered vents in every ocean on Earth (most recently the ice-covered Arctic) his newest interest is in Ocean World exploration and Astrobiology.

Chris is a Fellow (2000) and past President (2004-05) of the Challenger Society, UK.  He was a Royal Institution “Scientist for the New Century” (2000) and received an MBE in 2002 for services to Marine Science.

He moved back to WHOI in 2005 to serve as Chief Scientist for Deep Submergence (until 2014) and was elected a Fellow of The Explorers Club in 2015.  He currently serves on NOAA’s Ocean Exploration advisory board and NASA’s Planetary Sciences advisory committee.
