Executive Director, XPRIZE

Dr. Jyotika Virmani is the Executive Director for the Planet & Environment Domain at XPRIZE and is the Prize Lead for the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE, a three-year competition to advance deep-sea technologies for unmanned and autonomous, fast and high-resolution ocean exploration. She works across all Planet & Environment activities at XPRIZE, including the oceans and water, natural disaster prediction, forests, and climate change. She joined XPRIZE in 2014 as the Technical Director for the Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health XPRIZE, a competition to incentivize the development of accurate and affordable ocean pH sensors.

Before joining XPRIZE, Jyotika served as the Associate Director of the Florida Institute of Oceanography, as a Senior Scientist at the UK Met Office, and as the Executive Director of the Florida Coastal Ocean Observing System Consortium.

Jyotika has a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the University of South Florida, where she worked on air-sea interactions and both blue water and coastal oceanography. As a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar, she earned a M.S. in Marine Environmental Science (Atmospheric Science) from SUNY at Stony Brook. She also has a B.Sc. in Physics from Imperial College London and is an Associate of the Royal College of Science and a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.
